Top 5 Things Transfer Students Can Do to Plan for UGA

We’re excited that you’re considering joining the University of Georgia community! Applying as a transfer student can feel complicated, but with the right preparation, you can set yourself up for a smooth and successful application process. Here are the top five things you should do before applying to UGA as a transfer student.

1. Understand How Your Courses Will Transfer

One of the most important parts of planning to transfer is knowing which of your college courses will count toward a UGA degree. Not all courses transfer in the same way, and some may apply differently depending on your intended major.

Before you apply, use UGA’s Transfer Equivalency Tool to see how courses from your current or previous institutions may transfer. This tool shows how courses have been evaluated for previously admitted and current UGA students, and can help you make informed decisions as you plan your coursework.

Planning ahead and choosing accredited institutions with transferable courses can make the transfer process much easier.

2. Make Sure You Meet the Minimum Consideration Levels

Before applying as a transfer applicant, review the minimum criteria required for transfer consideration. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission, but it’s an important first step.

For students who have 30-59 transferable credit hours and want to attend the Athens campus, you must have:
  • 30–59 completed hours of transferable college credit by the application deadline
  • Graduated from high school at least 12 months before your intended term of enrollment
  • Completed at least one year of college by the intended term
  • A 3.30 or higher calculated transfer GPA
For students who have 60 or more transferable credit hours and want to attend the Athens, Griffin or Tifton campuses, you must have:
  • 60 or more completed hours of transferable college credit by the application deadline
  • Graduated from high school at least 12 months before your intended term
  • Completed at least one year of college by the intended term
  • A 3.00 or higher calculated transfer GPA

3. Plan Ahead for a Competitive Application

Transfer admission to UGA depends on available space, not just your GPA or number of completed credits. Being intentional about your coursework and planning ahead can strengthen your application.

If you are close to the minimum consideration levels, your Statement of Purpose, which is part of the application, may be used as part of the admission review. This is your opportunity to explain your academic journey, goals, and why UGA is the right fit for you.

Be sure to review the Transfer Admission Deadlines early so you know exactly when materials are due for the semester you’re applying to.

4. Gather Application Materials Early

To apply as a transfer student, you’ll need to submit:

  • Transfer Application for Admission
  • A non‑refundable $70 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you’ve attended (including dual or joint enrollment, study abroad, transient, or summer programs)

Starting this process early gives you time to request transcripts and avoid last‑minute stress.

5. Use UGA Resources to help get your questions answered

You don’t have to navigate the transfer process on your own. UGA offers dedicated resources to help answer your questions and guide you along the way.
