Home-Educated Applicants

The University of Georgia welcomes applications for admission from students who are educated at home, as well as applicants who attend non-accredited high schools. Per the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG), students who are home-educated or who attend a non-accredited high school must satisfy certain criteria in order to be considered for admission to any public two- or four-year college or university in Georgia.

USG institutions may require additional information to determine the academic preparation, as well as the competitiveness of an applicant for admission. In an effort to have a fair and consistent review process, our Faculty Admissions Committee follows the outlined criteria below, in accordance with USG policy, for the admission of students who are home-educated or who attend non-accredited high schools.

Accredited Home Study Programs

If a student pursues a home study program that is accredited by a regional authority, a state’s Department of Education, or certain Georgia authorities, an official transcript must be submitted for review. These students will be reviewed in the same manner as traditional high school applicants during the review process.

Recognized Accrediting Body:

  • Department of Education for the state of which an applicant resides

Recognized Georgia Accrediting Bodies:

  • Georgia Accrediting Commission
  • Georgia Private School Accrediting Commission
  • Accrediting Commission for Independent Study

Recognized Accredited Regional Authorities:

  • SACS – Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • MSACS – Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
  • NCACS – North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • NEACS – New England Association of Colleges and Schools
  • NACS – National Alliance of Christian Schools
  • WASC – Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Additional Requirements

If a student is home-educated or attends a non-accredited high school, they must demonstrate their academic ability through standardized test scores and/or accredited course work. The student must also be able to validate completion of all RHSC (Required High School Curriculum) subject areas through submission of the following:

  • Official Standardized Test Scores from one of the following:
    • SAT or ACT (for math and English only)
    • International Baccalaureate (IB)
    • Advanced Placement (AP) exams
  • Coursework for credit that appears on an official college or an accredited high school transcript

After an applicant submits the UGA application and all required supplemental materials, UGA Undergraduate Admissions will conduct a holistic review of the entire file for students who are home-educated or attend a non-accredited high school. These applicants are evaluated within the same First-Year applicant pool as all other students, and UGA will offer admission to those who are the most competitive.
